Whether you're looking to start your career in the ports industry or take the next step into a supervisory or management role, your CV is often the first impression you make. In this three part series we share what we look for when we review applications at Portico Port Services. Part one covers what to put in your CV, how to tailor it to each role, and why a lack of ports experience shouldn't hold you back.
At Portico Port Services, we review hundreds of applications every year for roles ranging from port operatives to supervisors, administrators and managers. While every role is different, one thing remains the same – the strongest CVs clearly demonstrate who you are, what you've achieved and why you're the right person for the job.
Your CV should tell your story
One of the biggest mistakes we see is candidates simply listing where they've worked.
Instead, it's your opportunity to demonstrate what you've accomplished, the value you've added and why you're the right person for the role. For example, rather than writing:
"Worked as a port operative."
Consider:
"Safely loaded and discharged vessels handling over 500 tonnes of cargo per shift while maintaining a zero lost-time incident record."
This immediately tells us about your responsibilities, your capability and your attitude towards safety.
Whenever possible, include measurable achievements (like the zero lost-time incident example above). Numbers help bring your experience to life.
Tailor your CV for every application
No two employers are looking for exactly the same thing.
Before applying, carefully read the job description and identify the skills and experience the employer is seeking. Then make sure your CV reflects those requirements using the same wording where appropriate. Tailored CVs do better than those that aren't, particularly where employers use applicant tracking systems (ATS) to screen applications.
If you're applying for a port operations role, highlight experience such as:
- Cargo handling
- Vessel operations
- Forklift or plant operation
- Banksman or slinger duties
- Health & safety compliance
- Manual handling
- Team working
- Shift working
- Customer service
- Security awareness
If you don't have direct port experience, don't worry.
Don't rule yourself out because you've never worked in a port before. Some of our strongest employees have built successful careers after transitioning from logistics, warehousing, manufacturing, construction, retail, hospitality, the Armed Forces and many other sectors. They brought transferable skills, a positive attitude and a willingness to learn and have gone on to build rewarding careers with us.
