Part one looked at how to tell your story and tailor your CV to each role. Part two covers three things that consistently separate strong applications from the rest. Safety, presentation and the opening paragraph that introduces you.
Safety isn't just another bullet point
Ports are safety-critical environments.
We look for candidates who understand safety is everyone's responsibility.
If you've held safety responsibilities, reported near misses, completed safety training, improved workplace procedures, or worked under strict compliance standards, make sure your CV says so.
Safety culture is something we're proud of at Portico, and candidates who demonstrate that mindset immediately stand out.
Keep it clear and professional
Recruiters often spend only a short time reviewing an initial application before deciding whether to continue reading. A clean, well-structured CV makes a significant difference.
Aim for:
- Two pages maximum
- Clear headings
- Bullet points rather than long paragraphs
- Professional font
- Consistent formatting
- No spelling or grammatical errors
Simple almost always beats complicated.
Don't underestimate your personal profile
Your opening paragraph is your opportunity to introduce yourself.
In just a few sentences, explain who you are, what experience you bring, what type of role you're looking for, and what value you'll add.
Avoid generic phrases like "hard-working team player", and instead, be specific. For example:
"Experienced port and logistics professional with eight years' operational experience working within busy commercial environments. Strong commitment to safety, customer service and operational efficiency with proven experience working flexible shift patterns and delivering results as part of high-performing teams."
In part three, we cover qualifications, career progression and the final checks before you apply.
