To engage assist with the mooring and slipping of vessels and linkspan / gangway watches within Portsmouth Port.

To apply for this role you must be able to demonstrate previous achievements in the following areas:

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the mooring and slipping of vessels, including handling associated equipment.
  • Perform gangway and linkspan duties as required.
  • Maintain cleanliness and safety within the working environment at the port.
  • Communicate effectively with Berthing Masters to ensure smooth operations.
  • Follow safety regulations and operational procedures diligently.

Qualifications:

  • A basic standard of literacy and numeracy is required consistent with completing reports and documentation.

Experience & Skills

  • Knowledge of seamanship and proficiency in using ropes and heaving lines is advantageous.
  • Previous experience with vessel berthing and slipping is beneficial.
  • Understanding of the Health & Safety at Work Act is essential.
  • Must be physically fit, healthy, and capable of swimming short distances.
  • Must be trained and competent in manual handling techniques (training provided).
  • Experience with linkspans and quayside equipment is helpful.
  • Excellent communication skills at all organisational levels, including engagement with external customers, port users, and the public.
  • Resilient with the ability to work under pressure and meet agreed deadlines
  • Flexibility to work at all times of day and outside.
  • Strong customer service experience and communication skills.
  • Ability to work on own initiative.
  • Hands-on approach and attitude to work.
  • Teamwork/Interpersonal skills.

Further Information:

Successful candidates will undergo comprehensive training specific to the Port and will receive on-the-job mentoring until deemed capable by the Berthing Masters. During training, salary will be £14.12 per hour, inclusive of annual leave accrual, with a minimum of 3 hours pay guaranteed per shift.
