We are looking to recruit Traffic Marshals to join our team in Portsmouth to be responsible for the safe, efficient, and compliant management of vehicle and pedestrian movements with the Portico Shipping operational area. The role is critical in maintaining safe traffic flow, supporting vessel operations, ensuring adherence to site rules and minimising operational risk across stevedoring and terminal activities. The role is initially temporary for 6 months but there may be an opportunity for the role to become permanent.

Responsibilities:

As part of the Port Services Operations team, you will be responsible for:

  • Safely control and direct all vehicle movements, including HGVs, plant and service vehicles within operational port areas.
  • Marshal vehicles during loading and discharge operations to ensure safe and efficient traffic flow.
  • Enforce site traffic management plans, speed limits and designated pedestrian segregation routes.
  • Maintain clear emergency access routes and prevent congestion in high-risk operational zones.
  • Conduct dynamic risk assessments during live operations and respond proactively to emerging hazards.
  • Challenge and report unsafe behaviours, near misses and breaches of site rules.
  • Communicate clearly via radio and hand signals with drivers, vessel crews and operational teams.
  • Undertake general operational duties as directed, including housekeeping and cleaning of the site to maintain safe, tidy and compliant working areas.

Experience & Skills

To apply you must be able to demonstrate skills & experience in the following areas:

  • A basic standard of literacy and numeracy.
  • A full driving licence.
  • Valid Traffic Marshal / Banksman certification (desirable).
  • Valid Counterbalance Forklift ticket (desirable).
  • Experience working as a Traffic Marshal, Banksman or in a similar operational role.
  • Effective use of hand signals and radio communication.
  • Experience managing HGV and plant movements in a high-risk environment.
  • Proven previous experience within the maritime sector (desired) or another sector, preferable in operations.
  • Understanding of traffic management principles and safe systems of work.
  • Strong customer service experience and communication skills.
  • Ability to work on own initiative.
  • Teamwork/Interpersonal skills.
